Personal Support Training
Personal Support Worker Program 07741
The Personal Support Worker program is designed to give you the opportunity to develop those skills required to provide personal support services to consumers and their families, clients and residents in the community, at home, and in long-term care facilities and institutions. Services provided by the graduate include assistance in daily living activities, personal care and hygiene, restorative/activation activities and home management activities.
While persons trained as personal support workers are expected to use judgment in responding to the needs of their clients, they are not expected to diagnose, assess or to respond to acute or unexpected situations (beyond any emergency assistance which might be required).
Additional Costs
Students should budget approximately $700 for textbooks and supplies, Hepatitis B vaccine, First Aid and CPR, uniform and shoes. This does not include travel to and from school, and to the field placements.
Humber reserves the right to adjust admission requirements, curriculum and hours based on the approval from the Ministry.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Personal Support Worker program are eligible to seek employment opportunities that were formerly associated with health care aides, homemakers or home support workers, home helpers and personal attendants.
Note: Courses must be taken in the order as listed in the following chart. Semester two courses will be offered in September 2006.
Admission Requirements
Note: Grade and/or course requirements are used in the selection process for all programs
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma at the general level or equivalent;
- Mature student status;
- Police record check*;
- Pre-admission testing (sentence skills, reading comprehension and a writing sample). Fee: $35.
Humber reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to refuse student access to people placed in its care.
Additional Requirements
Students must also be able to meet the applicable outcomes within the training standards for this program. Thus, fitness to complete the practicum components that would bear relevance to the academic or placement requirements of the program may impede successful admission into the program. The additional requirements include:
Immunization record;
Hepatitis B vaccine;
*Police Record Check - Students in programs or occupations involving direct contact with vulnerable persons are required to undergo a police record check. Humber reserves the right to deny admission or withdraw a student from a program based on an unpardoned criminal record bearing relevance to the academic or field placement requirements of the program. It is important for potential and current students to understand that failure to meet the police record check requirements may prevent them from successful admission or completion of the program. Employers and agencies offering student placement opportunities will require a police record check before accepting a student for field placement. Failure to meet the requirements for field placement will prevent students from completing the program and/or securing employment. Instructions on how to apply for a police record check will be provided before the start of classes or at the appropriate time during the program. Additional information and application instructions are also available at oesc-cseo.org. Depending on the duration of the program, students may be required to update their police record check at specific times throughout the program;
Students will be required to complete Standard First Aid and Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate courses prior to PSW. 156 Long-Term Care Facility Field Practicum; these courses may be taken prior to starting the program or concurrent with the program;
Students doing a practicum must be in good physical and mental condition meet the same physical and immunization requirements as those for the staff employed by the agency/facility where the practicum is taking place. Clinical courses PSW. 156 and PSW. 256 begin at 0700 hours. Students are to be on the ward at 0655 hours. Practicums include long-term care facilities and institutions, homes in the community and agencies providing services to the community in the greater metropolitan Toronto area.
